A CISO’s case for optimism on AI

Policymakers, business leaders, and security professionals around the world are watching the rise of artificial intelligence closely to understand AI’s impact on cybersecurity. There are concerns that AI will give attackers new tools to target businesses and consumers. Others fear the AI revolution won’t be evenly distributed; that it could widen the gap between well-resourced organizations who can afford to implement AI-based cyber defenses and those who can’t.
CISOs are, by nature, short-term pessimists and long-term optimists. AI has immense potential to transform the practice of cybersecurity. AI-enabled cyber defense tools are already helping organizations combat problems like ransomware at global scale. AI will help cybersecurity professionals work faster and smarter when every second counts, and when faced with a global talent shortage. It will also transform software development, potentially eliminating entire classes of vulnerabilities at scale. Cloud providers will play an important role in driving adoption of AI security tools, both driving down costs and making them more accessible by public and private sector customers of all sizes.
Governments and technology providers must work together to develop a policy framework to ensure the safe and secure use of AI, and one that enables organizations in the EU and around the world to tap into these capabilities to address evolving threats.
